#reverb12 – Day Eight

What’s this #reverb thing? ;)

Today’s prompt:

Considering the idea that nothing lasts forever: what was the most important relationship that you fostered in 2012? How will you continue to nurture it in 2013?

I would have to say it’s the relationships (that’s right, I’m not picking just one!) that I’ve developed and strengthened over the last year by moving to Edmonton and then back to Calgary. While it wasn’t convenient to move all of my things TWICE up and down Highway 2, it was a learning experience that’s helped me grow more than I thought possible.

The friends I have in Edmonton are keepers, plain and simple. They love me for who I am, and have put up with so many ups and downs I can’t begin to thank them for sticking it out with me. Four old, one new. Those are the people whose company I enjoy the most and whose opinions I value above others.

But returning to Calgary was an experience as well. I was surprised to find that I still had people here waiting for me, ones who are willing to stick with me no matter what city I live in. And to top it all off, I developed a much closer friendship with one person from school (this awesome lady) and her sister (who is my new neighbour).

These are the important relationships in my life, and the ones that became crystal clear in 2012. I’ve also learned to let more go, to get the toxic out of my life and to move on. There’s one person in my life that I have a 14-year history with, and I’ve finally come to accept that we will never get that connection back. I think moving back to Edmonton in May 2011 helped to solidify that for me, and in spite of the less-than-happy ending, I’m glad that there’s an ending period. I now have a name, a category, to put that person into. Which is all I’ve wanted for the last four years.

Finally, there are the Internet friendships that I feel I have connected with this year. At the risk of sounding like a total dork, I know that without the tweets and message board posts from some very lovely people, I would have felt much more isolated over the last 12 months. Thanks to Jenn, Catie, Cori, Mika, Shannon, Cole, and everyone from Lavish MB for everything this year! You ladies are somethin’ else ;)

I want to make sure these people know how important they are to me, and I want 2013 to be even better!
