Writer’s Manifesto

That phrase makes me feel even more left-leaning than usual, but I came across this post at Soul Pancake and wanted to give it a whirl:

Manifestoa public declaration of intentions, opinions, objectives, or motives.

To move forward as a writer, to really stand out and be noticed, you have to stand for something. You work must be anchored to a set of truths that are important and unique to you, even if those truths change. You must have your own opinions and have the courage to share them.

You have to stand for something – this is your manifesto.

So, here’s my version of my own writer’s manifesto:

I will write about things that I find interesting, important, and relevant, regardless of their popularity. I will write about and include details on what am comfortable divulging, not about what other people find interesting (though hopefully those two things intersect more often than not). This blog is my outlet, the repository of  things that I come across in my life, and always has been for me and whomever happens upon this URL, in that order. I will continue to write because I enjoy the act of writing, and reading old entries. I will write and blog because it continues to keep my own writing sharp and on point in my professional career. I will be objective when writing about news events, and always try to offer two points of view. The truth is more important than the story.

Mostly, I will write and blog and take photos because I love it. And nothing can take that away. This is for me, and about me, and I won’t let a whole lot get in the way of that.

What’s your writer’s manifesto?

4 Thoughts on “Writer’s Manifesto

  1. I loved this! I’ve never thought about writing my own manifesto, but I suppose it would run something along the lines of “I will write for myself but with the consideration of others. I will write about what I find important or notable, aiming to stay balanced but true to my own thoughts. I will write positively where possible and blog for the love of blogging, not out of a sense of duty. I will blog to manifest!”. It feels weirdly therapeutic to write things out like that. :)

    • Definitely! I always like to write something definitive; it makes me feel like it’s more likely to happen then. And I love your manifesto as well, especially the part about writing for yourself but with the consideration of others.

Been following TNCR for awhile now ;) it suits you!

  2. For now, I think I am going to adopt yours. Yours is a good one to strive for. I have never thought of writing my own, but I think if I really sat down and thought about it, mine would be very similar to yours.
