edmonton, snow, and the red hot chili peppers

I’m in Edmonton for the weekend; I had bought tickets to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers here before I knew that we were moving to Calgary. And holy crap, the show was amazing! Because they played a double booking here — Wednesday and Thursday — the set lists were completely different. So, for the Thursday show, here’s what they played:

  1. Monarchy of Roses
  2. Dani California
  3. Otherside
  4. Can’t Stop
  5. Parallel Universe
  6. Tell Me Baby
  7. I Could Have Lied
  8. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie
  9. Higher Ground
  10. Right on Time
  11. Under the Bridge
  12. Factory of Faith
  13. Californication
  14. Ethiopia
  15. By the Way
Encore:
  1. Chad & Mauro & Josh Jam
  2. Sir Psycho Sexy
  3. They’re Red Hot
  4. Soul to Squeeze
  5. Give It Away

The show was inCREDIBLE! The fact that they played I Could Have Lied, made me swoon. All the feelings that I described while writing my tattoo post came out in spades, and I couldn’t have asked for a better show.

I love coming to visit my family in Edmonton, because it’s so relaxing. I try to see as many friends and people as I can while I’m here, but beyond that I don’t need to worry about anything. There’s no worrying about prepping meals, cleaning (beyond cleaning up after myself, of course), etc. After the weekend in Victoria, I needed some downtime and this is just what the doctor ordered. I’m so lucky to have the family that I do! My brother bought me lunch this trip, and last night my mom took us out to dinner. And it was all gluten free! My mother made sure of that at dinner last night, as they brought out my steak sandwich with the bread and the fried onions on top of my mashed potatoes (despite me asking for them to not add those). She said it was an allergy, it was celiac, and they’d have to take it back and fix it.

For some reason, hearing that come out of my mom’s mouth made me realize I need to be more assertive in restaurants as well. I don’t know if that would have been enough to make me sick, but why chance it? And if I asked for it to come without those details, why should I take the chance on a bad night because they didn’t get the order right? Strange that someone else needed to stand up for me so that I could figure this out.

It’s been snowing all morning, and I’m having a great quiet morning with my coffee and my blog. I love this lazy mornings, with the dogs and some music or the TV in the background. And the best part? It’s still only Saturday. I have one more day of this tomorrow before I start the drive back to Calgary.

Ahhhhhhh. I can feel my stress melting away :)

10 Thoughts on “edmonton, snow, and the red hot chili peppers

  1. Wow, that’s quite an encore! I’ve usually only seen two songs or so played for one.

“For some reason, hearing that come out of my mom’s mouth made me realize I need to be more assertive in restaurants as well.”

It’s awesome that you had that breakthrough—I bet it will help you out for a long time coming! I know that some people serving/making get really weird about others’ allergies/dietary preferences, but I think there are a lot of people out there that will go the extra mile for you, too.

I’m curious, who do you find to be in the majority? Do you find that most people take your food allergies seriously?

    • It’s hard for anyone to take me seriously, when *I* don’t take me seriously, you know? It’s been largely positive, but there have been a couple well-intentioned but ignorant servers out there. One of them tried to tell me and my group that she “used to be celiac but grew out of it.” …

I know you can develop it at any age, but I’m fairly certain you can’t grow out of it. In any case, she did her best but I’m pretty sure there was something in my salad dressing or on the chicken because I felt pretty gross a couple hours later.

Have you been thinking of trying gluten free? Or do you have food allergy concerns too?

      • I’m just vegetarian. So not actively allergic to anything that might get in my food, but I’d rather not have chicken bits in my salad.

I guess I can relate to not taking myself seriously. I have the luxury of not suffering any bad effects if my food does come in contact with meat, but it does suck when a restaurant takes vegetarian options off the menu. Can’t say I have to deal with preachy servers very often, though!

        • It just stinks when you order something and it doesn’t come out right, regardless of what effect it will have on you ;)

Gluten is tricky, because of the sick-grossness after effects, but in general eating at a restaurant should be pleasant no matter your restrictions (self-imposed or not).

  2. Well I’m glad we didn’t get all that snow here in Calgary. It’s really nice to hear that you had a good time up North. Haha. Family always make me feel better. Your concert sounds like it was awesome! I don’t really know anything by the RHCP so I can’t weigh in on any of the songs except Californication. That was overplayed like crazy on the radio.

I am so glad that your mom sent your meal back. You should get what you ask for! The server is there to meet your needs and you should be able to order whatever you want :D

    • Thanks for the server support! It’s hard for me to be assertive, but I’m getting there :)

And yes, Californacation was WAY overplayed on the radio, omg. ENOUGH! But the show was great :D
