cat’s out of the bag

So I may as well write about it publicly now; tomorrow is my last day at my current job! I’m sad to be leaving, but excited about the next part of my employment adventure.

And it’s nothing that anyone did or said, it’s just the reality of moving to Calgary. As a NFP, there’s not a lot of extra dollars to go around, so it would have been incredibly difficult for them to keep me around. Someone needs to stay in Edmonton, and I knew that if they found the perfect person there, I’d be hard-pressed to make a case for me to stay over them. I’m sad to be leaving all the friends I’ve made there and it will be strange to not work with the crew anymore, but I’m looking forward to this new position at the same time. Again, I don’t want to put too much of my work life on my blog, just for privacy’s sake. But it’s something super specific for a different agency so I’m a little nervous about the change as well. It’s a whole new industry.

In any case, it’s just another transition on the long list of changes that have taken place over the last 18 months.

Let’s just list a few of them, shall we?

  • University graduation – April 2011
  • Move to Edmonton – May 2011
  • First job – May 2011
  • Thomas moves to Edmonton – July 2011
  • New kitten – October 2011
  • New job – November 2011
  • Thomas moves back to Calgary – June 2012
  • Move back to Calgary – August 2012

That is a lot of stuff to cram into one year. I’m hoping that the next 18 months will be a reprieve from this kind of stuff — no more moving or new jobs, please! And if we got another cat, I’m pretty sure the three of them would gang up on the humans and revolt.

Thomas’ work is finally settling down a little as well, so I’m finally seeing him more often when one of us is more than semi-conscious and half asleep.

Side note: this post brought to you by two beers and a glass of wine. You’ve been warned.

I’m also looking forward to the changes that this will bring in other ways. As long as the weather is nice, I have the option to walk to work in the morning. I’m planning to take 45 minutes to an hour to take my time and walk down. Get a coffee on the way, enjoy the morning. It wouldn’t have me leaving a whole lot sooner than I do now, since there’s about 30 minutes between start times from the two positions.

Getting more active will feel fantastic, because I really haven’t done anything since June and have started feeling like Jabba the Hutt. It’s hard for me to do nothing, but at the same time it’s so easy to be complacent, especially if you feel totally drained by the end of the day. But diving will start again soon and between that and the walking I’ll be solid.

The funny thing about exercise and feeling better is that you have to have energy to do it. But, because you don’t do it, you have no energy. It’s like the never ending cycle of suck, and it’s one I’m doing my damnest to get out of. I’m tired of being tired, and I’m too young to be saying that at 24. There’s a bunch of different things I’m going to try, but I’ll start with the easiest and most manageable: walking to work.

WHEW. So, having said all that — how’s everyone else doing??

  1. It’s great to hear that you want to be more active. I applaud you for that. I hope that the weather sticks out and you can walk for a while yet. I also hope that there are no more major changes in your life for a while. That is a LOT of stuff for you to go through in a short span of time. I also hope you enjoy your new job!!! :D

  2. Hope things settle down for you and you can get back into diving! I know that cycle of energy suck. It’s where despair and rocky road brownies live. It’s nice sometimes, but clawing your way out can suck. Hope your morning walks are awesome, I’d love to be able to do that!
