I’ve had my current car since the summer of 2008. It had close to 200k (kilometres) on it when I bought it, and over the last five years I brought it all the way up to 230k+ with all the trips to and from Calgary/Edmonton. Not to mention the two moves we’ve gone through the last two years!
Ugh. Seeing it all typed out like that, it’s hard to fathom how we got through it all.
In any case, my car is now starting to show signs of its age. The engine when running in park sometimes sputters, and the gas mileage isn’t that awesome anymore. Thomas and I have talked about investing in a new car this summer, and I think it’s time. While Thomas learns to drive, he can take Fred (my Ford Focus) around until he doesn’t run anymore, and we’ll have a new car ready to go to Edmonton to visit my family and see his sister up north.
I remember when I went to Germany in 2003, that’s when I first saw Smart cars. They were freaking fascinating to me! Who would drive such a tiny, tiny vehicle? But now that I’m sniffing around for a new vehicle, they’re appealing all over again. There’s a snazzy new Mercedes Smart car that’s available now, and it’s so tempting. The City of Calgary has a Car-2-Go program, and I’ve driven one of their Smart cars a couple of times. It’s a smooth ride, and it’s (obviously) so easy to find parking. I really, really like that.
However, I know Thomas really wants to look at Subarus too, as he’s driven one of those a few times and finds it’s great for gripping the road. Given that we’re driving on the highway to go see my family up north and the weather isn’t always nice, a car that hugs the road is also a great selling point.
It’s going to be awhile before we have to decide, so does anyone have any suggestions? Ideas? I haven’t bought a new car (ever!) so any help is appreciated!
