endless cheese

That is what I would like right about now. Just endless amount of cheese.

Ever since coming back to Calgary, I’ve been inhaling insane amounts of (safe) grains and cheeses, because it’s what I was really missing in Mexico. Just last night, Kaila and I managed to down two boxes of Annie’s White Cheddar shells and some nachos & salsa, and we both still wanted a third box of macaroni…

Having these two around helps though.

It’s been difficult to settle back into everyday Calgary life. I underestimated the impact that “vacation brain” would have on my functioning by about a million percent. Coupled with that is the cold I picked up somewhere in Mexico that refuses to just go away! Cold medicine + antihistamines (now that spring has sprung my allergies have EXPLODED) + vacation brain = a barely functioning Kylie.

However, the fact that I’m living in a haze completely separate from reality does not make the things that I need to get done magically go away. I submitted freelance drafts to a client on Monday, ran all my vacation laundry through the wash, and went back to work Tuesday. Now there’s dentist appointments to go to, grocery shopping that needs to be done (eating out every day gets expensive, y’all), and preparations to make. I need to get to Edmonton June 6-9 for a consultation with my surgeon and an appointment with my orthodontist. I’m hoping that the surgeon will be able to tell me when my surgery date will be, but I’m not holding my breath; it seems odd to make a whole appointment to just tell me when he’ll be cutting my face.

That weekend is also the moving weekend for my cousin, and my aunt’s birthday weekend. We’re going to have a double-birthday party, since my 25th is the week after that on the 15th.

I love summer. There’s so much to look forward to! In addition to all of the above, there’s a weekend at Sylvan Lake with my friends, a potential camping trip, an engagement party, and two family weddings. What else can we get in there? Bring it, Summer 2013!

Ruth’s Chris equals delicious

I have to say, there are some serious perks to dating a chef. One of the more obvious ones is that I get a lot of great food at home (and this is sadly not entirely accurate; the second you get home, are you more or less inclined to start doing exactly what you’d been doing at work for 8+ hours?), but another one that I didn’t expect is that I get to eat at a lot of excellent restaurants. The industry is small, and people know each other. Because Thomas works in kitchens, he knows which chefs are doing cool things at which restaurants in the city.

Today, I was fortunate enough to have lunch at Ruth’s Chris, and they’ve just launched a new lunch menu.

I’ve eaten here for dinner before, but while the experience is similar, the food is completely different. For dinner, go ahead and get yourself a steak. They’re tender, juicy, and come out sizzling on a molten-hot plate. This also has the pleasant effect of turning the butter into crispy deliciousness around the edge.

But the lunch menu is a little lighter, offering some amazing salads, sandwiches, and appetizers in addition to the classic steak.

Our table had the mushroom caps and beef carpaccio to start. I believe my exact words were “If this was all we ordered I could stop here and be quite content.” The mushroom caps were covered in cheese and filled with succulent crab legs. Four caps were quite enough to satisfy our table of three!

The carpaccio was sliced so thin, I had a hard time envisioning exactly how they did it. The beef was delicious, and the arugula, parmesan and capers on top were the perfect hits of flavour. Nom.

For our entrees, we ordered the chicken sandwich, the steak sandwich, and for my gluten-free-specialness, the sesame-crusted ahi tuna salad. After a quick comparison, it was determined that I was the lunchtime victor for orders.

Everything was — you guessed it — delicious. The chicken burger was amazing, according to the diner, and the bun stayed crispy even though the chicken was juicy.

The steak sandwich was cooked perfectly to order, and the garlic baguette was savoury. Again, this is according to those eating it, since I clearly can’t sample ;)

My tuna was tender, juicy, and drizzled with a sweet chili sauce that added the perfect kick. The salad was enough to fill me up, and had avocado, mint, and other tasty goodies to liven up the flavour profile.

Honestly, it was delicious from start to finish.

Anyone in downtown Calgary/Stephen Ave, you’d be remiss to pass up an opportunity to eat here. And, it’s totally possible to get in and out within a lunch hour. So what are you waiting for?
