the pintester movement

So if you haven’t heard, there’s a blog out there called the Pintester. It’s written by Sonja Foust and she is pretty freaking hilarious. I met her (or heard of her blog, I can’t quite remember. Sorry Sonja!) at BlogHer last year. She tests and fucks up Pinterest pins. And how awesome would it be if that were your full-time job?

And now, Sonja is letting other people in on her turf — she’s hosting a Pintester Movement, and bloggers from all over will be testing (and fucking up) pins! I am one of them. The total list of participants can be found on her website!

For this little experiment, I decided to try the Guilt-Free “ice cream” pin.

This one only has three ingredients, but I was sceptical of whether the results would be any good. I mean, we’ve all had ice cream, and we’ve all had bananas. They are not the same thing, people.

Bananas. NOT ice cream.

But, despite my lack of faith in the banana-ice cream conversion I decided to try it anyways. According to the recipe, you first start with the bananas. And to start on the right foot, I kinda fucked this one up before I even really got going, because according to the website you’re supposed to cut up the banana and then freeze it. I started with frozen bananas, and nearly got frostbite trying to peel them. Brr.

Then, you add the peanut butter and cocoa. Then (if you’re me) you make your second fuck up of the evening, immediately on the heels of your first. You reread the directions, and realize that you’re supposed to use a food processor, not a blender, to get everything silky and smooth. (And if you didn’t just hear this in your head, then we’re friends off.) And apparently the food processor/blender thing is a big deal, because the above photo is after I started the blender not before. As you can see, there’s not a whole lot of change…

I’m at a bit of an advantage though, since I live with a chef. Thomas happened to come upstairs as I was putting this all together, and (as is often the case when I’m cooking) he stopped to ask me what the hell I was doing. I explained and he took one look at the concoction in the blender and told me that I needed to add cream. That would aid in the ice cream part of the recipe, but definitely take away from the “guilt free” part of it. Though, I suspect any recipe with four bananas and peanut butter isn’t too healthy to begin with. What’s a cup of cream on top of all that?

I finally got the right consistency though! But, instead of ice cream, it’s more like that stage of ice cream where it’s not frozen any more, but is still cold enough to hold a semi-solid shape. The ice cream soup stage! The stuff you’d have left over in your bowl after eating the majority of the ice cream. Which really, considering this is just bananas, cocoa, peanut butter, and cream that’s not too shabby.

So, I didn’t pull a classic Foust and fuck this up royally. Just kinda sorta fucked it up, and was lucky enough to have someone around to save me from my Pin-testing self. But, if you add some cream and need to use a blender instead of a food processor, I’d say my version of the pin was largely a success! But it’s no longer very guilt free. Maybe just pick up some ice cream unless, like me, you were partial to the ice cream soup stage of ice cream.

Ruth’s Chris equals delicious

I have to say, there are some serious perks to dating a chef. One of the more obvious ones is that I get a lot of great food at home (and this is sadly not entirely accurate; the second you get home, are you more or less inclined to start doing exactly what you’d been doing at work for 8+ hours?), but another one that I didn’t expect is that I get to eat at a lot of excellent restaurants. The industry is small, and people know each other. Because Thomas works in kitchens, he knows which chefs are doing cool things at which restaurants in the city.

Today, I was fortunate enough to have lunch at Ruth’s Chris, and they’ve just launched a new lunch menu.

I’ve eaten here for dinner before, but while the experience is similar, the food is completely different. For dinner, go ahead and get yourself a steak. They’re tender, juicy, and come out sizzling on a molten-hot plate. This also has the pleasant effect of turning the butter into crispy deliciousness around the edge.

But the lunch menu is a little lighter, offering some amazing salads, sandwiches, and appetizers in addition to the classic steak.

Our table had the mushroom caps and beef carpaccio to start. I believe my exact words were “If this was all we ordered I could stop here and be quite content.” The mushroom caps were covered in cheese and filled with succulent crab legs. Four caps were quite enough to satisfy our table of three!

The carpaccio was sliced so thin, I had a hard time envisioning exactly how they did it. The beef was delicious, and the arugula, parmesan and capers on top were the perfect hits of flavour. Nom.

For our entrees, we ordered the chicken sandwich, the steak sandwich, and for my gluten-free-specialness, the sesame-crusted ahi tuna salad. After a quick comparison, it was determined that I was the lunchtime victor for orders.

Everything was — you guessed it — delicious. The chicken burger was amazing, according to the diner, and the bun stayed crispy even though the chicken was juicy.

The steak sandwich was cooked perfectly to order, and the garlic baguette was savoury. Again, this is according to those eating it, since I clearly can’t sample ;)

My tuna was tender, juicy, and drizzled with a sweet chili sauce that added the perfect kick. The salad was enough to fill me up, and had avocado, mint, and other tasty goodies to liven up the flavour profile.

Honestly, it was delicious from start to finish.

Anyone in downtown Calgary/Stephen Ave, you’d be remiss to pass up an opportunity to eat here. And, it’s totally possible to get in and out within a lunch hour. So what are you waiting for?

time to run

So. Vacation booked. 5K race planned. And do you think I’ve managed to get my butt to the gym? Of course not…

I definitely have the “I’d really prefer to sleep in the morning” issue, coupled with long work hours (9/day, 10 with commuting) and the inability to wind down at night if I work out too late. So there’s precious few windows when I’m able to be awake and exercising.

But really, looking back and reading that, it’s bullshit. If this is important to me (and I think it is), then it’s something that I’ll *make* time for. Now I just need to plan and schedule ahead, and take charge and do it.

Luckily though, my braces have finally calmed the hell down and are giving me a lot less grief. I got the metal brackets put in on March 25, and so far not a single one has broken! (Knock on ALL THE WOOD.) This means it’s easier for me to eat, and because the metal ones are smaller it’s easier for me to breathe and function too. The plastic ones just kept my mouth so uncomfortable and it was hard to shut it or breathe properly.

I’m hoping that the combination of desire-to-look-good-in-a-bikini, finding friends to go to the gym with, and cooking more at home will lean my body down. Since starting my new job I’ve gotten a lot more … lumpy. I’m still roughly the same weight, but muscle is turning to fat and everything is much softer than I’d like. So it’s time for the gym! I’ve also resurrected my MyFitnessPal account to keep better count of what I’ve been doing to my body, and…oof. Burgers and wine may have to be treats instead of weeklies…

It’s just so frustrating, and I’ve written about it before: I hate feeling so out of shape and disconnected from my body. I miss feeling athletic and strong. But do you think I could get my act together to get to a gym? Hah.
