dammit

This week has been pretty chill — not a lot going on, and it was full of great work and times with friends.

Not like the Horrible Awful day from a few weeks ago, the one I think I forgot to write about. I forgot my camera at home when it needed to be at work, was running late, found out I have zero ortho coverage through work (shortly after getting braces put on), and got a flat tire all in the span of about 5 hours. It was a lot to take in, to say the least.

I solved the mood issue by going home and nomming some pizza (despite protests from my still-sore mouth) and having some delicious gluten-free beer.

I bring this day up only because I’m still trying to deal with the fall out. I’m still waiting for my orthodontic receipt to be reimbursed through my government program, and just this morning I took my car in to the shop to have the tire fixed. I was first in line, dropped my keys, and was told there’d be no charge because that’s where I originally bought the tires (Canadian Tire, for anyone interested).

So, I hopped on transit to get my butt into work, smugly thinking I’d even be early. On a Friday! This was practically unheard of.

Then I got a phone call while I was on the train. “Wow, you guys *are* fast! Maybe I should have just waited there!” “No, not quite…” my very no-nonsense mechanic told me. “Your tire is irreparable, and the other one is looking like it’s about to go. I’d recommend getting two new tires, but you for sure need one.”

… awesome.

So my free patch is now a $260 replacement.

But, cars need tires I’m told! And at least Fred (my car, remember?) will be in tip-top condition to drive to Edmonton this weekend. I have another ortho appointment on Monday to switch the clear brackets (ie, Breaky McBreakerson brackets — 6 in the last month) for metal ones that will be more sturdy. The highway was INSANE yesterday, so now is not the time to be taking chances on sub-par tires.

How’s everyone else’s Friday?

the time or the will, but never both simultaneously

I’ve been meaning to blog since Sunday (ugh, seriously?) but my “real” life pretty much exploded all over the place (in a good way, mostly) and I’ve been busy mopping up ever since. Seriously, I composed an entire blog entry in my head as I walked home from work yesterday, but by the time I got in the house, I was distracted by a million and one things. I didn’t even eat dinner until 9:45pm (whoa). That’s some Grade-A distraction there, folks.

The blog I wrote in my head was about how warm rain freaks me out, if you were wondering. Essentially, we’ve had a crap-ton of rain (scientific definition) since Monday, and I was expecting to freeze my buns off walking to the train to go to work, so I wore a jacket. However, the rain was warmer and so was the air. It was a little muggy and sauna-y outside as well, which TOTALLY THREW ME OFF. Most of the time, if there’s precipitation this far north, it’s only about 10 degrees away from turning into snow. (Celsius, that is. About 18 Fahrenheit for my American friends. THIS IS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, btw. I’m willing to do temperature conversions so you don’t have to. You’re welcome.) So warm, muggy weather is just bizarre to me.

There’s SO. MUCH. that I want to blog about, but some things need to stay private (for now). So instead I’ll describe and show to you exactly what $1700 in your face looks like:

There's a gold crown in my mouth. And my dentist rocks.

(Also, how awesome is my dentist for being totally not freaked out by his patient asking to take a photo of the crown before it’s put into place? VERY is the answer you’re looking for. He’s the bomb.)

Having a gold tooth also made me feel vaguely like a pirate. Y’harr.

I had my crown put in on Tuesday, and didn’t even need to take any sedatives (unlike this visit). I’m glad that the crowning part of my dental work is done (for now) because oh my GOD are those suckers expensive. Honestly, you’re looking at $1700 in the palm of my dentist’s hand right now.

Lucky for me, my work insurance is awesome and will cover roughly half of that. So while it’s a financial hit to the wallet to try and cover the remaining it could be so much worse.

And as I said, there won’t be any more of these unless an emergency replacement is necessary. Otherwise, the next step in the journey of my mouth (haha) is to the surgeons office, where he’ll tell me all about how whack my jaw bone is, and how we should break that sucker to make it fit into place. Or at least, that’s what I assume the conversation will be like. I don’t know if anyone, never mind surgeons, still say “whack” (or is it “wack?”), so it’s probably a little off.

As I said, there’s so much more I want to talk about, but it’s not the time or place yet (but don’t worry, it’ll happen). I have a lot to look forward to in the next couple weeks, including a Firefly marathon with a total badass, a birthday party for a Twitter friend, more Blitz fitness tonight, and then my birthday next Friday! If you want to send presents, I wouldn’t turn them down. ;)

i am houdini

I also had to look up how to properly spell “Houdini.” I had it down as “Houndini,” so I suppose I could’ve been the mystical magician mutt instead.

Instead, I am the Houdini of the blog world, disappearing at random times for unknown intervals!

This weekend, in my defence, was ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. I kept y’all as updated as possible from the road with these entries here, but I’ll outline the whole weekend from start to finish and hopefully encapsulate just how badly I needed time off (and still need more time off, to be honest).

Thursday:

My dad and I hit the road at 6am MDT, right in time for the big ass snowstorm that we seem to get every spring. We were driving 60 hm/h down the highway (limit 110 km/h) until about 150km outside the city. This is unheard of! Apparently my dad was just about ready to turn back and call it, but we pushed through and were able to make good time after that. Stopped in Hinton for breakfast (Timmies). Stopped in Kamloops for lunch (the city that amuses Mike to no end!). Made it to Chilliwack around dinnertime 5:30 PDT (12+ hours after we left Edmonton) and stopped to see Grandma at the hospital. We were met with Grumpy Grandma (as we were warned we might be), so we had a quick visit then went to check into the hotel. Watched the Flames vs Canucks game at the bar next door, had dinner, then went to sleep.

Friday:

Woke up around 7:30am, and hit the road by 9:30am (?). Got to the hospital and spent the late morning and early afternoon with Grandma. We all watched the Masters, chatted, and overall had a good visit. My uncle came back around 1:00pm to give her some lunch, and my dad and I went back to his house after she was finished to let her rest. We watched more golf there and I napped a bit. Got up, went back to the hospital with my aunt to get Grandma some dinner (which she was not impressed with), and around 6:30pm got some ourselves. My dad and I took my aunt and cousin out for dinner at the Cactus Club Cafe. Expensive, but delish. We drove back to the hotel and crashed.

Saturday:

Woke up at 6:00am, and was at the hospital in time for breakfast (8:30ish). Grandma was already up and awake! She has some memory issues, and we were told she might not be all there in the morning, take some time to warm up to us and get back in her proper frame of mind, but when we got there she’d already had half an egg and a yogurt for breakfast (BIG deal!) and was completely cognizant and alert. GO GRANDMA! We stayed until 10:30 or so and then my cousin came in for a visit. Dad and I drove to Surrey so he could golf with his buddy and I spent some time with Keith and David (my friends and his buddy’s sons). Lots of sushi was consumed, then we drove to White Rock beach and walked up and down along the shore. SO GORGEOUS! (Photos coming.) I rode a bear (my new Twitter avatar) and we headed back to Surrey to meet the parents for dinner at Boston Pizza. After dinner, back to their house to watch the last hockey game of the season for the Oilers (no playoffs again, booooo), and back to the hotel to crash.

Sunday:

Up at 5am. Driving by 6am. Drive drive drive. Eat eat eat. Lather, rinse, repeat. We made it back to Edmonton and my parents’ house by 7:30pm (12+ hours of driving, that time change is tricky!) after an extended stop in Jasper to eat dinner and watch the Masters some more.

Monday:

Yesterday I slept a little later (9:30am) after getting home Sunday night at 8:30pm. I played some SWTOR, then went to FedEx to pick up the second Erin Condren planner that I had been sent after they lost the first one (which showed up anyways). This one will be going to Sarah, who hopefully won’t mind the big KYLIE on the front of it ;) . Picked up my friend Justin afterward, and we went to the pool for a good diving/swimming session. Went straight from there to pick up some freelancing material (that I’ll likely be tackling tonight, since Thomas is working a transition/night shift instead of his usual day shift). I finally came home around 7:30, and set about cleaning up loose ends (getting my tax return ready to send to the government, organizing/hacking my planner, unpacking, etc). Thomas came home, we had some couple-time then it was sleep.

WHEW. 780 words on the weekend, good God.

Today’s going to be a good day. RHCP finally announced their Edmonton date for the I’m With You tour (YAY!) so I’m stoked on picking up tickets (and already cringing at their probable price tag), Counting Crows released a new album (seriously) so it was good listening material for the train. I also woke up on time, got a good night’s sleep last night, and Garth Brooks will release ticket info for the Stampede concert today. YAY. Aside from forgetting my allergy medicine this morning (ohai, itchy eyes and runny nose!) it’s shaping up to be a winner! And the whole night to myself too, for freelancing and *cough*16andPregnant*cough*.

Have a good one!
